21 Tips for Cheaper Car Insurance – Tip 1

1. Buy a low insurance group car.

An extremely important element to your insurance premium is the make and model of car you drive. Most insurance companies adopt the Association Of British Insurance Group Rating. Common sense tells you that it will be cheaper for a new driver to get insurance on a Fiat 500 than a Porsche Turbo, but there’s a huge range in between which can sometimes throw up surprising results using this rating.

Apart from the size of the engine and speed of the car, insurers will sometimes take into account how many claims they settle involving particular models. Sometimes this results in cheaper premiums than expected for some popular ‘performance’ cars and conversely, more expensive premiums for some ‘reasonably priced’ cars.

This is where comparison sites really come into their own. Once you’ve entered all your details it is pretty simple to swap out the original vehicle with several other options. Be prepared to be surprised by the results as you cycle through your short-list of cars!
