21 Tips for Cheaper Car Insurance – 18

18. Get a job!

Believe it or not, your job title is one of the most important factors in determining your car insurance premium. So, you might reason that being unemployed will help you get a lower premium because you’re not driving to and from work every day.

In most cases you’d be absolutely wrong! The insurer has no idea where the car will be driven or parked at any time of the day or evening. The underwriter will also find it much harder to compare a loosely defined unemployed person’s ‘typical’ claims profile than say a tightly defined ’nursery school teacher’.

The more specific the job title, the more data the underwriter will be able to reference when considering an insurance premium. An unemployed person presents underwriters with a lot of unknowns. The less the insurer knows about the true risk your policy represents, the higher your premium is likely to be.
